The Gamakatsu Assist 550 Short is a heavy-duty single assist hook designed as an alternative to factory treble hooks on plugs and hard baits. Its short, flexible assist leader provides the strength needed for powerful pelagic gamefish while helping maintain the natural action of the lure.
Unlike the rigid metal shank of a treble hook, the Assist 550 uses a flexible connection that reduces the leverage a hooked fish can use during the fight. The single-hook configuration can also make releasing fish quicker and reduce the number of hook points involved compared with a traditional treble.
Each hook is rigged with 110 lb. test polyethylene braided line and a welded ring for easy attachment. The extremely short 1/8-inch leader keeps the hook positioned close to the lure while allowing enough freedom of movement to help preserve lure action.
