spanish marckerel would rather take a live a bait than a dead bait. artficals do just fine (GOTCHAS, AND SPOONS).
Spanish mackereal love moving bait, or lures such as spoons. But when using baitfish for bait long shank hooks are just for them. Usin regular hooks lets the mackereal bite way past the fish ad onto the line. And sense spanish mackeral have sharp teeth. You loose your line. So the best combo for cathcing spanish mackereal is live bait, then long shank hook, then a stell liter just in case. Now you should know the rest.
The Spanish mack is notoriously hardware shy, so rather than using a swivel between leader and line, tie an albright knot and watch your hookups increase.
When catching Spanish from a pier, most are lost between the water and the pier railing twenty five feet above. If one dunks a hooked mack's head under the water and fills that gaping mouth with seawater several times, in effect drowning the fish, he will be far less likely to flop his way off the hook. Try it!
