Capt. John Kumiski is a U.S. Coast Guard licensed captain and fly/light tackle fishing guide based in central Florida's Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge. He has been guiding for twelve years, and is professionally associated with Cape Fear Fishing Rods, Redington Fly Rods, DOA Lures, and Rip Tide Lures. He runs a Maverick Mirage 2, and uses an Old Town Camper canoe to fish the no motor zone.
Kumiski has been fishing since childhood, and fly fishing since his early teens. He is a member of and holds a flycasting instructor certification from the Federation of Fly Fishers, is a member and two term past president of the Backcountry Flyfishing Association of Altamonte Springs, and also belongs to the Coastal Conservation Association of Florida, the Florida Outdoor Writers Association, and the Outdoor Writers Association of America. He organizes an annual Fishing Day for Kids through the Backcountry Flyfishing Association.
An award winning writer, Kumiski is a columnist for Saltwater Fly Fishing magazine and the fly fishing editor for Coastal Angler Magazine. John also contributes frequently to Florida Sportsman, Sport Fishing, Tide, and many other magazines and is the author of four books, including Flyfishing for Redfish- The Complete Guide to Catching Red Drum on Flies and Flyrodding Florida Salt- How and Where to Catch Saltwater Fish on Flies in the Sunshine State.
Kumiski frequently gives fishing seminars and speaks at fishing shows and clubs throughout the Southeast. His slide programs and talks have informed and entertained thousands of anglers.
Kumiski is 47 years old and is married with two sons. In addition to fishing he enjoys nature study, hiking, canoeing, camping, photography, reading, and spending quality time with his family.
