Thousands of Puppy Drum Stacked at CoCo Passes!

Thousands of Puppy Drum Stacked at CoCo Passes! Thousands of Puppy Drum Stacked at CoCo Passes!
By Frank Davis

If you consider yourself one of those impatient kinda fisherman who just has to have bite and a tug going on the exact minute your bait hits the water, go to Cocodrie, bring along 50 feet of rope and a heavy anchor, and fish the deep holes just off the main passes. That's where thousands of 4-6 pound puppy drum are stacking up this weekend.

Me and the guys on my fishing team found one school today at the main pass at Sister Lake that seemed to have have had a gazillion fish in it. And we caught them hand over fist, documenting it on camera, for this week's Fishin' Game Report. In fact, this is the true story, no word of a lie. We pulled up to the pass at exactly 7:15 and made the first cast at 7:16. When we put drum Number 20 in the boat (because we had four guys fishing, five fish per person limit), I looked at my watch and it was eleven minutes past 8 o'clock. So are those some consistenly feeding fish, or what?

Just for the record, though, we did continue to fish "catch and release" up to 9:30 (and in the interim managed to bring aboard two really nice redfish). So just because you get an early limit doesn't necessarily mean you got to shut it down and go home. Just catch 'em, take their pictures, and put 'em back easy-like.

Now if you'd like to get into some of that same non-stop, tacklebusting action come this Saturday and Sunday, do this:

  • Bring live crabs with you for bait.
  • Remove the legs and top shell and break them into quarter-crab pieces.
  • Rig a sliding sinker outfit with a heavy duty swivel, a 2 ounce weight, 18 inches of 50 pound test monofilament shock leader, and a 4/0 Kahle hook.
  • Anchor in one of the deep-water passes (you can find them by finding poor Pierre's, which are always anchored in deep water).
  • Last into the depths and wait just a second or two for the drum to zero in on the cracked crab.
  • Set the hook hard when you feel the pressure on the line and bring a limit of fish into the boat as quickly as you can bait up and execute retrieves.
Now, if you're a novice I truly recommend stout tackle for these big guys. That means a so-called deepwater rod like a Triton, a semi-heavy baitcasting reel like a Shimano, and a load of 30-pound-test monofilament. If you're proficient enough to handle lighter tackle like a 7-foot Castaway matched with a Shimano Calcutta 250, you can use that as well and have the time of your life. Just make sure the drag is set properly and don't horse the drum!

Of course, if you don't have the right tackle and you don't have a boat and you want to try your luck at getting a charter, you might call to see it any of the captains who run Johnny Glover's 11-vessel fleet has had any cancellations. They all know right where these stacks of puppy drum are holding up. Oh, yeah--the number at CoCo Marina is 985-594-6626.

Next week, if the weather gives us a break, I want to go back to see what's happening in Lake Pontchartrain this month. Are the monster trout still there? We'll let you know. In the meantime, be really careful out there and be courteous to your fellow fisherman.

Frank Davis

P.S. I also want to thank my fellow fishermen who gave me a tow back to the marina last Saturday when the water in my gas tank got into the fuel line. I appreciate you being so gracious and looking out for me. I'll be ready to return the favor when it's my turn.
